Kathmandu: The United Nations has welcomed the recent trade talks between the United States and China, calling the development a crucial and positive step toward ensuring global economic stability.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric praised the dialogue held in Switzerland between high-level officials from both nations, noting that cooperation between the world’s two largest economies is “of great importance for the stability and development of the global economy.”

The talks led to a temporary 90-day agreement aimed at significantly reducing retaliatory tariffs that had intensified the months-long trade war. Under the deal, the US will reduce tariffs on Chinese goods to 30%, while China will lower tariffs on American imports to 10% during the agreed period.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant called the agreement a “constructive step forward,” highlighting the productive nature of discussions with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and Trade Representative Li Chenggang. “Both sides demonstrated great respect and a commitment to progress,” Besant stated.

The breakthrough follows months of escalating tariff hikes, including a 145% US tariff on Chinese goods last month and China’s 125% countermeasure on American products. Analysts feared the tit-for-tat actions could trigger global inflation and a potential economic recession.

The temporary truce offers a reprieve to global markets and signals renewed willingness by both nations to resolve differences through dialogue — a move the UN sees as vital for broader economic confidence.
